UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME

Regardless of their income, wealth, or employment position, all people of a nation or other geographical area might receive a set amount of money under the universal basic income UBI paradigm. Increased equality among citizens and the prevention or reduction of poverty are the goals of UBI.

The fundamental tenet of basic income is that everyone has a right to a decent income, regardless of whether they contribute to production or not and regardless of the unique circumstances of their birth.

UBI has been mentioned in the media as a possible solution to help the workers that automation has displaced. In a not-too-distant future scenario frequently referred to as the robot economy, Musk, Zuckerberg, and many others are of the opinion that robots and AI-enhanced software may replace the majority of human labour.

There were 164 million Americans in the labour force in June 2022. Each person in the labour force would need a GBI of $12,000 per year ($1000 per month), which would cost $1.968 trillion annually. Many supporters of UBI contend that it would not be necessary to increase welfare spending; rather, a basic income would enable the government to eliminate unnecessary programmes and lower related administrative expenses.

Universal Basic Income is opposed by more than half of Americans. Many people would only be in favour of it if tech businesses paid for it by paying higher taxes. It is a strongly debatable topic as there is no clear picture on how the plan will be developed and implemented.

Thank you.
