Media named Modicare, the
world's largest government-sponsored healthcare
programee was launched on September
23rd 2018. It has two major goals:
- First to create a network of health and wellness infrastructure across the nation in order to deliver diversified primary healthcare services.
- Second to cover population which is deprived of secondary and tertiary care services. 14555 is the Helpline number for this scheme.
In-patient hospitalization expenditure in India has increased nearly 300% during last ten
years. According to National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 2015, Out of pocket
(OOP) expenditure in India is over 60% which leads to nearly 6 million families
getting into poverty due to catastrophic health expenditure. AB-NHPM will have
major impact on reduction of (OOP) expenditure by increasing benefit cover to
nearly 40% of the population, 10.74 crore poor families will get benefit of
secondary and tertiary care hospitalization, providing Rs 5 Lakh coverage per
family annually, more than 13000 hospitals have been added to work smoothly.
This will help to increase access to quality health and medication. It will
cater the unmet needs of the population which remain hidden due to lack of
financial resource. This will automatically lead to timely treatments,
improvements in health outcomes, patient satisfaction, improvement in
productivity, efficiency and job creation. Thus leading to improvement in
quality life.
According to CRISIL
report, the scheme will increase the penetration of health insurance in the
country, from the current 34% to over 50%. By MOODY’S report, the number of
people in India covered by health insurance stood at 440 million at the end of
2016-17, which could increase by an additional 500 million with the
implementation of Ayushman Bharat. The expenditure of paying premium will be
shared between Central and State Governments in specified ratio as per the
guidelines issued by the Ministry of Finance.
